What’s the Alternative?

I have just watched a program on prime time main stream television called ‘The Last Chance Driving School’!

10 individuals had been chosen who had repeatedly failed their driving test; they were made up of both men and women from all walks of life, with a wide age range and varying levels of intelligence.

Individually some of these people…
• Had taken and failed 10 or more driving tests,
• Been learning to drive for over 10 years,
• Invested more than £10,000 in their endeavour to pass their test.
Taken as a group…
• Total spend was in excess of £55,000!
• A total of more than 50 driving tests had been attempted and failed!
Do you think that is reasonable or a RIP-OFF?
Three of the top instructors in the country were invited to give the pupils a week’s intensive driving course during which time their driving skills would be analysed by each of the three instructors.

They hoped that at the end of the week, the reasons why each of these individuals had failed their tests so many times would become apparent.

In order to help them pinpoint the issues a psychologist, behaviour analysts together with numerous computer programmes were employed.

• Out of the 10 pupils on the course only 8 were considered anywhere near the standard required.
• Out of these 8 people, only 6 passed.
• The pass rate was deemed as 60%
• The national pass rate in the UK is 44%
Having the advantage of the pupils driving every day, all day for the whole week; plus the many analysts at hand and with the aid of computer technology to aid with identifying and pinpointing issues the pass rate was only increased by 16%*?

• Remember how much money they had originally invested as a group – that doesn’t include the time they had spent in taking the lessons?
• Remember how many stressful tests had been attempted?
• Remember how many years some pupils had persevered in their endeavour to hold a valid licence?

So, it DIDN’T solve the problem

The root cause of the issue is the way that pupils are taught!

As I viewed the programme I took the opportunity to study the general driving standard of the pupils together with the many problems & issues they were individually having with the whole driving experience. One thing stood out clearly in the programme and that is there was no difference between their shortcomings as drivers and the pupils I teach every day! My pupils are made up (as are learner drivers all over the country) from a selection of individuals who may or may not fall into one or more stereotyped learner drivers. The most common categories are as follows…





• The ‘wanna be’ boy racer, who wants to do everything at 70 miles per hour, and cannot understand why he can’t or
• The middle aged female who has been told many times she will ‘never ever in a month of Sundays’ learn to drive and be allowed out in a car alone, or
• The usually calm and controlled competent driver, who is OK until you mention the word TEST – then they become quivering wrecks, unsure of their own name, or
• The more senior learner who thinks they already know how to drive (when they obviously don’t), dislike being told anything when attempting a manoeuvre & they should have done this years ago, or
• Pupils from different countries who may have language or cultural issues,
…and so the list goes on – do you recognise yourself in this list, I can almost guarantee that you know someone who is either learning at the moment, or who has tried and failed several times, that do fall into one of the above ‘stereotyped categories’?

During my career as a driving instructor, I specialised for some time in ‘intensive driving courses’. During that time I achieved a pass rate of 78% - remember the National Pass Rate as published by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is just 44%.

These pupils had their driving problems solved and were able to pass their test through…
